Beersheba researchers and their Harvard collaborators say they have adopted the Mediterranean diet to make it twice as effective in eliminating liver fat. Israeli researchers say they have found a version of the Mediterranean diet that significantly reduces liver fat by altering the traditional Mediterranean regimen and including special greens.
“For more than 20 years, our research team has shown, through rigorous, randomized, long-term studies, that a Mediterranean diet for fatty liver disease rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts is the healthiest,” said epidemiologist Professor Iris Shai. “We have discovered that some alterations of the Mediterranean diet can lead to substantial falls of liver fat.”
In 18-month clinical trials with 294 contributors in southern Israel, 70% of the contestants consumed different dishes from a Mediterranean diet and regularly exercised. They lost about the same amount, but those who ate the adapted “green” version, which was less meat, more plant-based foods, and more green tea, noticed special benefits in their liver.

“Although the Mediterranean diet and the green diet stimulate weight loss in general. Liver fat loss has been doubled for participants that were on a green version of the Mediterranean diet,” Shai told The Times of Israel.

Therefore, in addition to overall weight loss, there is also a lack of diets that are helpful in case of fatty liver disease protocols and/or drugs for fatty liver disease treatment which makes this finding even more important.”
The modified Mediterranean diet aims to provide high levels of polyphenols, organic compounds produced by plants, apparently to protect against stress.
A study by Shai, a professor at the Ben Gurion University of Negev at Beersheba and an assistant professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health was recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Gut. Several scientists from Harvard took part in the study.
What makes the Mediterranean diet so effective for fatty liver disease treatment?

Shai said: “Our opinion is that the components from the groups of polyphenols and fiber can modify the microbiome and make this form of Mediterranean diet beneficial in the treatment of fatty liver diseases and cleansing fat from the liver.”
